โ–ถImportance of Ice Fishingโ—€
Ice fishing is important and popular in Korea for several reasons,
both cultural and practical.

Connection to Nature and Tradition
It represents a way of connecting with nature during the cold winter months.
For centuries, rural communities in Korea have relied on fishing as a source of food,
and ice fishing is a way to keep that tradition alive
while embracing the harsh but beautiful winter season.

Cultural Celebration
It’s not just about fishing, but about coming together to enjoy nature, family time,
and shared experiences. It also showcases local culture through food, music,
and traditional activities, helping to preserve and promote Korea’s rich heritage.

Preservation of Winter Activities
As life becomes more modern and city-focused,
many old outdoor activities are at risk of being forgotten.
Ice fishing helps keep these traditions alive and
allows people to enjoy them, passing them on to future generations.
It’s also a chance to experience winter in a way that many might not get to otherwise.

โ–ถWinter Festivalsโ—€

Winter season has different festivals that attracts thousands of visitors each year,
boosting local businesses, hotels, and restaurants.
It highlights the beauty of rural Korea, showcasing lesser-known areas to tourists.

Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival
Has become the most reputable domestic festival both in name and reality.
Under the ice, half is Sancheoneo and the other half is water,
above the ice, the half is filled with people and the other half is the ice.
On CNN, they have depicted this very festival as the seven wonders of the world. In 2019,
on the first day of the festival, 140,000 tourists had gathered.

Hongcheongang Winter Festival
Pyeongchang has gained its reputation for snow and ice festival which overwhelms all the other counterparts.
Hongcheon Ice Fishing Festival is held every winter in Hongcheon,
giving many the chance to enjoy both trouts and the Hongcheon river.

As Hongcheon festival is known for its trouts fed with Ginseng,
you want to eat it fresh to enjoy the flavor of the fish meat with a touch of Ginseng taste!

Pyeongchang Trout Festival
In 2007, the Pyeongchang Trout Festival was started by locals to help rebuild the economy after a 2006 flood.

The festival aims to promote Pyeongchang, known for being the first city in Korea to farm trout in 1963.
It has since become one of Korea’s most popular events, now recognized as a cultural tourism festival.
